SEP 25: Bangladesh, a country of almost a
hundred and fifty million people, shares a common cultural heritage
with India. However, awareness of the richness of its cultural
tradition and the talent of its creative people is poor even in
cosmopolitan Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai.
Few Bangladeshi
singers have had the opportunity of a Runa Laila who took India by
storm in the late eighties.

Bangladeshi artists have taken their art
to Europe and America, but few are known to art-lovers in Mumbai. A
Bibi Russell may have got rave reviews at Fashion Weeks in London
and Paris, but her creations have never been seen on the ramps of
Mumbai.
TARA, the flagship Bengali television channel of Broadcast
Worldwide Limited, has been attempting to bridge this gap in
awareness of our eastern neighbor by organizing television events
in Kolkata featuring singers and designers from Dhaka. It has now
decided to undertake the much more ambitious effort of staging a
full-fledged Festival of Bangladesh in the business and
entertainment capital of India, Mumbai.
The Festival will comprise a Fashion Show featuring the
international fashion icon Bibi Russell and three important
designers from Bangladesh followed by songs in Hindi and Bengali
from the hugely popular Shakila Zafar and rounded off with some
amazing food!

There will also be a week-long exhibition of the work
of sixteen Bangladeshi artists and performances of Rabindrasangeet.
The inaugural function will be held on September 26, 2004 at Hilton
Towers in Mumbai. |
