Hate mail by professor to Muslim students
Prof Indrek S. Wichman NJ, APR 25 - A professor at a Michigan University sent out a hate-filled email last month to his Muslim students asking them to leave and "return to their ancestral homelands instead of troubling the Americans."

A copy of the email was forwarded to DesPardes.com by the Muslim Students Association of Michigan State University as well as by the Michigan chapter of CAIR.

Michigan state has the highest number of Arab and non-Arab Muslims in USA.

The email sent out by Professor Indrek S. Wichman (wichman@egr.msu.edu) of the Mechanical Engineering department of Michigan State University said:

"Dear Moslem Association:
As a professor of Mechanical Engineering here at MSU I intend to protest your protest....I counsel you dissatisfied, aggressive, brutal, and uncivilized slave-trading Moslems........If you do not like the values of the West--see the 1st Amendment--you are free to leave. I hope for God's sake that most of you choose that option. Please return to your ancestral homelands and build them up yourselves instead of troubling Americans."

Even though Islam is the fastest growing religion in the USA and since 9/11 there have been more converts to Islam than ever, misconceptions about it still exist among many Americans.

The president of Muslim Students’ Association (MSA) of Michigan State University (MSU), Farhan Abdul Azeez, in his email said "using his MSU email account, the said professor degraded Muslims by calling them, “dissatisfied, aggressive, brutal, and uncivilized slave-trading Moslems” and despicably demanded Muslim students to “return to your ancestral homelands and build them up yourselves instead of troubling Americans.” These virulent attacks are inexcusable for a MSU professor, especially considering the University’s collective commitment to fostering a welcoming academic environment for all."

Muslim students at Michigan State UniversityRepresentatives from the MSA along with Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) executive director Dawud Walid have discussed the email matter with University officials on at least four occasions. "Unfortunately, their response was unsatisfactory and therefore, the MSA is calling for a public letter of reprimand by the University to the professor", said MSA president Farhan - a Muslim student from India to DesPardes.com over the phone.

CAIR Executive director Walid also talking to DesPardes.com over the phone condemned MSU's ambivalent attitude towards the hate incident and demanded a more proactive and responsible dealing by the varsity officials of the incident.

The attacks of September 11 have catapulted the Arab and Muslim Americans into the spotlight. The spotlight was usually not so bright. These communities have faced several challenging trials ranging from alleged racial profiling to outright harassment by American officials on the Canadian US border to the passing of laws concerning indefinite detention. But some believe these same trials have triggered a wake-up call and the Arabs and Muslims are slowly but surely growing increasingly aware of the importance of taking an active part in political life.
