Hosting a lavish dinner for Charles and Camilla would be bad PR for Bush because while Princess Diana is still much loved by many Americans, her ex-husband is seen as dull and aloof — and both he and Camilla are widely blamed for the breakup of his marriage.

Bush’s shock decision is the latest in a sting of crises to hit the couple.
