Reality mimics media violence

NOV 12: Pittsburgh – A Pittsburgh-area theatre pulled gangsta rapper 50 Cent's film "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" following a gangster-style shootout that left one man dead and a trail of blood on the foyer. Although it has not been ascertained whether the film triggered the violence, the incident highlights the debate that exposure to violence in films can escalate subsequent aggressive behaviours and, among some viewers, encourage greater acceptance of violence as a means of conflict resolution.

A still from "Get Rich or Die Tryin"

According to West Homestead Police Department spokesman Jerald Berger, the audience for the 9 p.m. screening of the highly publicized film had just spilt into the foyer of the Loews Cineplex at the Waterfront in West Homestead near Pittsburgh when shots were fired during a quarrel between four people. Shelton Flowers, 30, succumbed to his injuries in less than an hour at a local hospital, Berger said. Apparently, the fight began in the bathroom, moved out into the foyer, and ended with the firing of shots and Flowers' death.
Neither police reports nor statements from Loews officials give any hint that the shootout was related to the film, beyond confirming Flowers' attendance at the film. John McCauley, a spokesman for privately held Loews, said the film was pulled only as a safety measure. However, the similarities are too glaring – the opening scene of the movie features a botched armed robbery in which 50 Cent's semi-autobiographical character is shot nine times although he survives the bullets!

The R-rated film is based on Curtis "50-Cent" Jackson's life which includes drug dealing, time in prison, and getting shot nine times. The shootout distressed 50 Cent: ''I feel for the victim's family in this situation,'' he said on ABC's 'The View'. ''But you know, these weren't kids. This was a 30-year-old man [who] had a dispute with three other guys.''

Following the shootout, concern by Toledo authorities over the violence in the film has prompted theatre chain, National Amusements, to end midnight showings at Toledo's Franklin Park 16 Cinema De Lux. There have been no reports of violence related with the film anywhere else. Police said Flowers had had altercations with the law in the past. At the time of his death, he was awaiting trial on charges of gun and cannabis possession, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and child endangerment.

In hindsight, violence is generally perceived as a necessary constituent in making a film entertaining. “Eliminating all violence from the media is not possible. Without the violence, there would be no story. A crime, either a murder or rape, are used to launch movie plots. I feel the countless murders and rapes witnessed by the average filmgoer – especially impressionable teenagers – are clearly exploitative. Violence is being used as a superficial means of grabbing audience interest. But at what cost,” questions an irate Anuj Bhatia, 38, an Indian professor.

Lisa’s $750k secrets about George Clooney

NOV 11: I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here bosses are desperate to get glossy haired Lisa Snowdon into the jungle, in the hope that she’ll tell all about her relationship with George Clooney.

Lisa and Clooney

Lisa is said to be considering a $759,000 offer – twice as much as Jordan was paid – to appear on the UK show.

A source said: ‘Lisa hangs around with Clooney and his pals like Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, so she’s going to have some great stories to tell.

‘She could let some sensational secrets out. She is an ideal contestant and ITV bosses are doing all they can to get her to sign on the dotted line. But time is running out.’
