Chokher Bali not screened at Dhaka festival

Aishwarya Rai in Chokher BaliDEC 4: When director, Rituparno Ghosh went to screen his film Chokher Bali at the International Film Festival of Bangladesh, in Dhaka, little did he know that he and his producer would be humiliated there.

Ghosh was asked to screen the film at the opening ceremony, but when he landed at the screening centre, he was told he had to watch the film on a pirated DVD.

When they protested, his film was replaced by another Bengali film.

And all this happened in the presence of the Bangladesh Prime Minister and the Indian High Commission.

Says Ghosh from Kolkata, “I’m really hurt at the humiliation of cinema,” but he doesn’t want to give it a political hue as he adds, “My protest is not against the state of Bangladesh, they have been very warm and hospitable.

In fact when they didn’t screen my film almost 150 people walked out of the hall in protest. But when you are holding an international film festival you can’t hold it in such a careless manner. ”

What happened? “Almost three months ago the festival chairman of the Bangladesh Federation of Film Society, M M Razaul Karim, came to invite me and my producers to show Chokher Bali as the inaugural film. Now, our film is in cinemascope.

When we (Mahendra Soni, the producer) went to Osmani Memorial Hall (Dhaka) on December 1 to show the film it was in the august presence of the Bangladesh Prime Minister, Begum Khaleda Zia and the Indian High Commissioner.

After we reached there they told us that they only had a 35 mm projector. Which meant that the film we had brought could not be shown there. They told us that the only solution was to see a pirated DVD version.”

A still from Chokher BaliSo did they watch it then? “Now this was too much! Imagine watching a pirated film in front of the PM. It was like condoning piracy. We wanted to walk out, but the doors were closed. To do something would be to create a scene in front of such respected people. And we didn’t want that.

The worst was when we refused to let them show the pirated version, they brought in another Bengali film, Teen Eke Teen and showed it without batting an eyelid.

The whole attitude was not only insulting to us, but also the producer and director of Teen Eke Teen who weren’t even informed.”

Why does he feel they didn’t want the film to be shown there? “Maybe it could have been that the print we brought was an unabridged director’s cut.
This had scenes which attempted to give a better understanding of the partition of Bengal which is an integral part of the film. Now, I thought it would have been relevant in the context of screening it in Dhaka but maybe they thought it might be offensive.”

Ghosh is bitter. “They should have checked with my producer or the Directorate of Film Festivals in Kolkata prior to us going there. It’s sheer negligence.”

Ghosh’s first Hindi film, Raincoat, starring Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai, releases on December 24.
