Catwalk with Despardes and find out what's haute in the Desi fashion circuit...

As whacky as a gypsy!

By Beverley D'Cruz

The buzzword today is boho-chic or for the layman it simply means gypsy all the way. To conjure up an image of what the trend prescribes imagine the J-Lo video "Aint It Funny" with her frolicking with a band of gypsies. Long skirts, tassels, scarves and peasant tops have come a long way from being the contemporary wear of the gypsy folk to now a world famous fashion fad. Think frills, ribbons, crotchet, and lace with an overall romantic feel.

The peasant top seems to be the most popular of the apparel. Usually with puffed sleeves either long or short and embroidery these tops are now being sold in almost every store. The sleeves and bodice are sometimes elasticised to give a fitted hourglass look but mostly they are loose and comfy. Not only are they pretty and wearable they can be either dressed up or down according to the occasion.

Today the top seems to wear well with denim be it jeans or a long skirt .The fabrics are varied and range from small floral prints to simple self coloured pieces. For the night strappy sandals or stilettos seem to fit the look along with low slung pants. Embroidery with rhinestones or a little sheen give it the feminine evening look.Stevie Knicks of Fleetwood Mac epitomized the bohemian look with her fluid fabrics and silver jewelry.

Another aspect of the gypsy couture is the accessories which range from tiny bracelets and hip belts to anklets and scarves. The clue to the look is to dress up the peasant skirt or top with the accompanying accessories but not to look like a fortuneteller. The day look often includes simple silver and colored bangles with anklets while the night calls for more colored beads and stones with trendy studded or tasseled hip belts.

Bohemian clothes have made a successful transition from spring to summer wear. The look is fun and colourful and seems to have caught on well with the hip crowd. floral prints are a rave with these kind of outfits. People are also being adventurous mixing it up with Indian style sarongs or cholis. The key to enjoying the entire fashion fad seems to be mixing 'n' match coupled with experimentation. As of now it looks like the gypsy style is here to stay for a while.
