LBD or Nothing at All
By Beverley D'Cruz
The
little black dress or the LBD has been prescribed as a style
necessity for over a .decade now. It is synonymous with being sexy
and having the ability to make you look good. Magazines and style
gurus always talk about having the little
black dress which would be the perfect outfit to that oh so
"supposedly" perfect event.
Award ceremonies as well as movies and
television serials have actresses all pretty in black attire leading
their audiences to believe that it is one of the most fashionable
outfits.
Cut to the present enter any club or restaurant, in India and you
are greeted by a thousand pretty young things all sporting little
(literally) black dresses. The phenomenon has come a long way from
being the comfortable sleeveless sheath and from just pepping the
little lady up.
Today it's all about feeling powerful and sexy and there doesn't
have to be an occasion to don the dress just an excuse. Most women
have started prescribing to the new fashion avatar, and not just
young girls.
Older women love to wear the colour because not only is
it the best for evening wear it's also known to cover up all flaws.
Black = slim and that's all that
matters for those who are tipping the scales on the higher side.
Jackets with slim cuts are worn for business meeting while the night
calls for the shedding of the jacket or a more colorful scarf or pashmina wrap. The possibilities with the dress are endless thanks
to the colour being so neutral. A string of pearls has always been
the most classic and popular accompaniment.
The pretty
young things seem to opt for sexiness in two ways, length or skin.
While some girls love revealing their flawless backs with tie ups or
a singular string other more conservative ones prefer a full cover
up yet short enough to glimpse a nice amount of leg. The tighter and
more figure hugging the better. Evening wear, club wear, wedding
wear all seem to have the little black dress as the winner. While
the colour black was often looked upon with a frown for youngsters
today, it seems like black is the
only way to go.
While Indian
society calls for less flesh revelation, the new way to be sexy is
with slits. This is not only popular with the older women but a
great hit with young girls. Side slits, center slits as well as long
slits up the thigh are the best for dresses which otherwise cover up
the wearer.
The
little hint of skin is gives enough of a teasing look yet not being
outrageously flashy or vulgar. Materials with a black on black
print,
shimmer, pinstripes and rhinestones are also selling quick further
proving that the dress is being experimented with pattern, material
and style but not with colour.
The trick to wearing the dress is how
you dress or accessorize it. Formal occasions call for more strappy
shoes and elegant handbags whereas for young girls teaming it with a
pair of boots and a hip chain for the night seems more appropriate.
The
ironic part is that while the dress is supposed to make you feel
good and subsequently look good it is more linked to a state of
mind. Most magazines tell women going through a break up to put on
their Little black dress and dancing shoes and go out and party, for
the perfect evening out with your loved one..surprise, grab that
little black dress.
So while the dress is supposed to be the perfect
accessory for almost antithetical events it still holds onto the
basic premise that the wearer feels good. The colour black has
always been associated with being sexy and its little wonder that
the dress lets the wearer feel as sexy and glamorous as possible.
