Narendra Kumar Ahmed is a
terrific designer and like most others who have proved themselves
locally, is hoping to make a mark on the international scene. So, some
months ago, Narendra tried to enroll himself in a trade show in
Atlanta, and was told that he’d have to send samples of his work to be
screened by a jury process before an invitation to participate came
his way.
As a well-respected Indian designer, Narendra could quite easily have
given up the idea based on his first interaction with a fairly
condescending bunch of event organizers. Instead, he sent the samples
requested and was rewarded, eventually, with high praise.
“Not only did they invite us to participate after that, they also said
it was the first time a brand that had never shown at their event
before was being slotted in the ‘premier section’, reserved for the
best designers showing!” says Kadambari , the
designer’s beaming companion. Clearly then, persistence pays. |
Indian designer to
dress J Lo
Some evenings ago, a designer by the name
of Ajay Shrivastav launched his international label
Gingerblu at Fuel, the fashion store in Chowpatty.
If his press releases are to be believed, the man has worked with
Armani, Betsey Johnson, Ungaro and Anna Sui
. Despite that, the star presence at the launch was minimal.
But that isn’t stopping Ajay from drumming up interest anyway, oceans
away in the US of A, if not in Mumbai.
From what we hear, the designer has been approached by
Jennifer Lopez’s stylist Arianne Phillips,
to provide an outfit she saw in the Gingerblu catalogue for the singer
to wear in an upcoming fragrance campaign.
The dress, a wisp in lilac (pictured right in pink), has already been
couriered to just-call-me-Jennifer’s offices in Los Angeles.
And if the lady with the voice does shake her world-renowned posterior
in a creation by this New York-based Mumbai boy, that will certainly
merit another mention… |
