Bangladeshi chef's 'Curry Hell'

Are you brave enough to accept the hot curry challenge?

A chef in Newcastle, England, has rustled up a fiery dish called 'Curry Hell', and has offered a deal to anyone brave enough to try it: Eat the full portion for free; if not, pay the regular price of £6.95.

Abdul Latif, who proclaims himself as the 'Bangladeshi Lord of the Manor', thought of this idea when approached by an official involved in a tourism promotion campaign in Northumbria in the 1980s. "I was quick to think that I would introduce the world's hottest curry. It was then that I created 'Curry Hell'. "I made a dish using just chilli powder, chilli seeds and water with a meat or vegetable," he said.

Latif says several people have managed to eat the full portion, while word of the curry challenge spread far and wide. "It's become a test of endurance for some people. They bring their friends and they have bets," he said.

People from all over Britain, he added, travel to his Rupali Restaurant to have a go at the dish. Besides, he proudly said that adventure eaters also came from as far as Australia, France, Norway and Germany.

His has now offered a 10 percent discount to readers of 'Eastern Eye', a newspaper catering to the Asian diaspora.
