Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna
A Cut Above! |

AUG 13 - Even before the film's
worldwide release Friday, there was a huge buzz around it -
evident from the historic advance booking all over
India and overseas.
Factors like its huge star cast, its unique storyline, catchy promos
and its songs like 'Mitwa', 'Where's the party tonight' and 'Rock
and Roll Soniye' were behind the hype.

Featuring an ensemble cast of Superstars Amitabh Bachchan and
Shahrukh Khan, current teenage heartthrob Abhishek Bachcan, the
vivacious Preity Zinta and graceful Rani Mukherjee, 'Kabhi Alvida Na
Kehna' has also evoked a lot of curiosity due to its novel
storyline.
There’s nothing unusual or strange about extra-marital
relationships, whether it's in India, USA, UK or on the
silver screen, for that matter. It's as old as sex itself. Such
activities of course draw
unbalanced views, magnum awes, depending on whether you are the
beneficiary or the loser in the relationship. Like extra maritals,
husband-spouse competition, jealousies, etc, jell well in the
Western societies where Desis/Deshis happen to be the cherry
pickers these days. They are the victims too.
Which is why it’s unusual that Karan Johar - whose emotion-filled
films are usually chocolate mousse for the filmi soul -
should choose to make a film about infidelity or the imperfections
in a marriage.
But, hold on. It's possible that he is attempting to reach out to
the Desi/Deshi Diaspora worldwide, more specifically in the West. The
subject of his movie is part and parcel of some of our lives and lifestyles
here, but most of us keep quiet about it, some fight back, others breakup
-
only a few move on depending on their individual takes.
Johar’s take on the issue that’s as old as the institution of
marriage itself is however long-winded. Three-and-a-half-hours long
and somehow the sappy ending - and the running commentary, which
sounds like making excuses - doesn’t quite work...hmmm...may be
overseas it will but may be not in India.
Johar touches on plenty of issues though. Through Preity Zinta and Shah
Rukh Khan, he explores the ego tussles between a more-successful
wife and her husband. Adding to Shah Rukh’s frustration is a broken
leg, which cuts short his dream of a professional football career.
Shah Rukh is the soccer dad who doesn’t quite connect with his
violin-playing son, doesn’t enjoy being the at-home dad, doesn’t
like that his wife is too busy managing work and "wearing the
pants".
Through Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan’s relationship Johar
explores a marriage that is one-sided and childless.
But Shah Rukh and Rani get more mileage than the rest.
For those who love the Karan Johar style of filmmaking - gorgeous
settings, to-die-for wardrobes, lilting music and get-jiggy-with-it
dance numbers - it’s all there plentiful.
The phenomenal rush in advance
bookings, coupled with the fact that the film is being released with
nearly 1000 prints, makes it a distinct possibility that the film
may turn out to be a bigger blockbuster than the recently-released 'Krrish',
which has already netted a gross of over Rs 150 crore in just five
weeks at the box office.
Desis/Deshis stretch from the
Gateway to India to the other side of the globe. The
final say on KANK may not galvanize until some time in the future but for those of us
who are living in the West, it is already a meaningful movie, albeit its
story.
