Around the recurrent roar on the roads, which should suffice as
Dhoom’s synopsis, is a hip, stern cop (Bachchan) trailing a band of
baddie bikers led by Abraham’s imposing, but perpetually posing
character.
The cop enlists a ‘coolio’ (Chopra, who walks away with the best
lines) to help nab the bikers, since he’s a road-scholar in motorbikes
and the art of its maintenance.
That apart though, in this constant, callous cat and mouse chase,
you’re not quite sure what is getting robbed (perhaps banks, as we’re
told initially?), how is it getting robbed, where’s the loot tucked,
and what happens to the bounty eventually.
All you know in this way-too-easy looking heist-feast is that less
than half a dirty dozen delinquents ride quick monsters, which
propelled by nitrogen oxide, can zoom beyond 300 km/h. You also know,
much later, that a girl (Esha Deol) in an awfully grotesque get-up is
also part of this group (who is she, not sure).
And I guess that’s all you need to know, since the reason of your
existence is not to reason what you see on the reels, but to rein in
the attempted adrenaline-kick.
If that’s purely your palette, you may find this desperately wannabe
racy Hollywood fix infinitely less disappointing than me.
What you can’t help but wonder as you exit this faux-neverland set to
a fantastically upbeat number (Dhoom Machale) is why you weren’t the
one on those mean machines. And of course, “Wish there were roads
between Mumbai potholes to snake those around like that, to begin
with!”
In short, it's all about one brave cop. One smart thief. One cool rider. And very nervous
viewers.
PS: Don't miss the Tata
Young number after the film ends. You're in for a real surprise!
Also, PS:
dear action directors. The gravity-defying sequences
straight from Matrix have been absolutely maxed-out at the movies.
If
you don’t mind, can we move on from those gyrating, slo-mo air
summersault stunts, please?
Rest is all right, thanks very much.
