Anil Ambani fires fresh salvo at Mukesh |
|
NEW DELHI,
Jan 13: RIL vice-chairman Anil Ambani on Thursday fired another salvo
at his elder brother Mukesh, accusing a key director of one of the
group companies of sullying the group's image. Anand Jain, director of
a Reliance company, IPCL, and a close confidant of RIL chairman Mukesh
Ambani, was the target of a letter sent by Anil to his brother. Anil
had attacked Jain earlier this month also by accusing him of conspiring
to divide the family. The fresh attack from the younger brother comes
amid reports that a formula for legal separation was being worked out
at the behest of Kokila Ben, the widow of Reliance founder Dhirubhai
Ambani, by ICICI Bank Chairman KV Kamath...(PTI) |

Indonesia's tsunami death toll nears 210,000 |
|
BANDA ACEH, Indonesia, Jan 13 - An official document says that nearly
210,000 people in Indonesia are dead or missing from the Dec. 26
tsunami, a death toll that appears to be far higher than officials have
reported publicly. Rescue workers think even that number may be low.
The larger Indonesia toll would bring the total of dead and missing
from the tidal surge across the Indian Ocean to nearly 272,000, ranking
the tsunami as the fifth or sixth deadliest natural disaster in about
250 years. (Knight Ridder

Malaria Could Kill 100K in Asia |
|
BANDA ACEH,
Indonesia (AP), Jan 13 - Malaria could kill up to 100,000 people in coming
months across Indian Ocean communities devastated by the Dec. 26
tsunami if authorities do not quickly move to kill mosquitoes, a health
expert warned Thursday.
"The 150,000
extra deaths from disease that the WHO predicts could occur ... is very
plausible," Allan said, referring to a World Health Organization
prediction of the number of disease deaths that could follow the
tsunami if precautions are not taken. "Up to three quarters of those
deaths could be from malaria."... |

Iraq rebels in video taunt |
BAGHDAD (Reuters), Jan 13 - Departing from fiery Islamic slogans, Iraqi
guerrillas have launched a propaganda campaign with an English-language
video urging U.S. troops to lay down their weapons and seek refuge in
mosques and homes. The video, narrated in fluent English by what
sounded like an Iraqi educated in the United States or Britain, also
mocked the U.S. president's challenge to rebels in the early days of
the insurgency to 'bring it on'. "George W. Bush; you have asked us to
'bring it on'. And so help me, (we will) like you never expected. Do
you have another challenge?," asked the narrator before the video
showed explosions around a U.S. military Humvee vehicle. The Islamic
Jihad Army video featured familiar scenes of guerrillas blowing up U.S.
convoys but also highlighted some of the key issues of the Iraq war,
from weapons of mass destruction to the September 11, 2001 attacks on
the United States.
"We have not crossed the oceans and seas to occupy Britain or the U.S.
nor are we responsible for 9/11. These are only a few of these lies
that these criminals present to cover their true plans," said the
narrator, apparently referring to the Bush administration's assertion
of a link between Saddam Hussein and those attacks. A masked speaker
with a machine gun beside him delivered his message to triumphant music
with the ring of U.S. military propaganda films during World War Two.
He said the enemy was on the run as the video showed guerrillas firing
on U.S. convoys, standing beside the corpse of an American soldier, or
loading a large shell for an attack... |

US is worst racial abuser! |
MUMBAI,
JAN 13:
Are executives working in call centers in Mumbai subjected to racial
abuse? According to customer associate representatives (CRA) in
the city, the United States is believed to be the worst
offender.
“We hear remarks like ‘you bloody Indians, you do not know
anything’. And at times when it becomes intolerable, we are
allowed to disconnect the call,” said a CRA with the Powai-based
Epicenter Technologies.
He however added that racial abuse was almost negligible in
countries like Canada and Singapore and minimal in the UK and
Australia.
“US has by far the highest incidence of racial abuse reported,”
he said.
Sarita Saxena (name changed), a CRA with Intelenet Global
Services Ltd, which has processes in the US, UK, Singapore, Hong
Kong and some other parts of Asia, said she was almost on the
verge of quitting her job because of one US-based customer.
“After he came to know that I was Indian, he just started to
abuse me saying that all terrorists come from India and the US
should bomb us all.
He then said we are violent because of the color of our skin,”
she said.
However, Susir Kumar, CEO, Intelenet Global, said that no case
of racial abuse has been reported in his company.
He said, “I have not encountered a single customer abusing a CRA.
Everything depends on the training given to the CRA. If racial
abuse is there in the industry, it is because of lack of proper
training in voice and accent.” (Mid-Day) |
