Pak Govt evacuates foreigners after sectarian violence
GILGIT, Jan 14: Government authorities have helped 36 foreigners leave a Himalayan town which is under curfew following a flare-up of sectarian violence, officials said today. Among those evacuated from Gilgit where a prominent Shiite religious leader was to be buried today following a fatal ambush are 14 South Koreans, five Chinese, one Japanese and 16 Afghans. The authorities have also shifted 70 Chinese construction engineers and workers from the construction site of a hydro-electric project near Gilgit to a safer location, he said. "We are not forcing the foreigners to leave the area, those who have decided to stay on are being provided security," he added.

Meanwhile, Islamabad police fired tear gas and used batons today to break up a rally by Shi'ite protesting against the death of their leader after a suspected sectarian attack. Up to 300 protesters turned unruly when police stopped them entering a road leading to the parliament in Islamabad.

Kanchi Mutt's SoS to Manmohan Singh
JAN 14: The Kanchi Mutt has reportedly sent an SOS to India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his immediate intervention to prevent the "disruption" of the special worship offered there for the past 2500 years, following the arrest of the Junior Seer Vijayendra Saraswati. The Mutt in its letter to the PM said, "our worst fears have now materialized and with the unseemly arrest of Sri Vijayendra Saraswathy Swamiji, there has unfortunately been a disruption to the powerful worship offered to Lord Chandra Mouliswar uninterruptedly for the last 2500 years".
The Mutt also criticized Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's letter to Singh dismissing apprehension that the puja traditions would be broken. It said Jayalalitha's observation  "is not based on facts". The letter signed by an unnamed Manager, with copy marked to VHP Supremo Ashok Singhal, said, "we shall be deeply beholdened to you for your immediate intervention in this matter".
