Dixit was a "valued personal friend": Kumaratunga
Chandrika KumaratungaCOLOMBO, Jan 3 : Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga paid her tributes to Indian National Security Advisor J N Dixit, who died today, saying he had been "a valued personal friend."

"President Chandrika Kumaratunga was visibly shocked when she learnt of his untimely death," said a statement from her office, adding she had written a letter of condolence to Dixit's wife "I had the pleasure of knowing him for over 25 years," she said. "He was a valued personal friend."

Dixit, who was India's envoy in Colombo from 1985 to 1989, wielded considerable influence over Lankan politicians, particularly in relation to their dealings with the rebel Tamil Tigers.

He was the moving force behind the first-ever attempt, in 1985, to bring Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to the negotiation table with government representatives.

Although the attempt failed to end the island's ethnic conflict, the demands put forward by the militants continue to form the core of stalled peace talks between the government and the LTTE. (PTI)
