A Champagne Buffet Under the Sun

NEW DELHI: Indulging in a leisurely Sunday brunch seems to be the latest fad in New Delhi. So if you’re planning a trip to India and Delhi is on your itinerary, don’t miss out on this one!

For some, the food is just an excuse – a Sunday brunch is a good way to unwind with family or close friends, have some beer, champagne or fruit juice, and dig into a succulent meal without the pressure of annoying deadlines.

Tonino at 10, MG Road has introduced a sparkling wine/ champagne brunch every Sunday “until the weather permits”. The thought of getting dressed on a lazy Sunday morning was a bit daunting, but once we arrived at the Italian bistro, it seemed worth the effort. A picture perfect sight greeted us: a Tuscany villa (complete with whitewashed walls and a green-slate roof) featuring a gourmet buffet under the mild winter sun with mangroves encircling the table, or within the warm woody interiors of the restaurant.

We began our meal with the antipasti counter, where one could choose from an array of delicacies – steamed prawns, Marinated Eggplants & Zucchini, smoked salmon, Parma ham, artichoke ramanna, assorted peppers, Bruschettas, and an assortment of winter cheeses like pecorino, gruyere, emmental and Parmesan. Moving to the Insalata (Italian for ‘salad’), take your pick from assorted greens, Caprese, Stagione, Con pollo Affumicata e melone, marinated mushrooms, asparagus, and potatoes with Pesto and bacon.

Before we knew it, it was time for the hot entrées – the live pasta station offered a choice of Penne, Spaghetti, Saffron Raviolli and Tortellini, accompanied by a smorgasbord of sauces including Alfredo, Carbonara, Al-Matriciana, Pavarotti, Marinara, Pescatore, Panna-Salmone, con pollo Affumicata, and aglio-e-olio peperoncini.

For the younger set, though, the live pizza station is a major attraction. I must add here that the pizzas with wafer-thin crusts, delightful toppings and dollops of cheese are must-haves. I recommend ‘Tonino Fantasia’, which has four different cheeses, chicken ham, lamb pepperoni, tomato, black olives and egg!

For the main course, there’s Petti Di Pollo Paillard (grilled vegetables and potatoes) or Lasagna Primavera. An hour later, the dessert counter beckoned and I couldn’t resist the Frutta Fresca and chocolate brownies despite a comfortably full stomach. Of course, there was no question of leaving without rounding off the meal with some coffee. Still hungry? Wander over to the cheese platter – it offers an eclectic choice of cheese with crackers, grapes, gherkin and olives…

All this – for a price of Rs 895 (plus taxes) for the wine or beer brunch, and Rs 995 (plus taxes) for the sparkling wine brunch.
