JUN 12 - Ex-Bangladesh premier
Sheikh Hasina Wajed left
the country on Thursday,
one day after she was
released from detention
on graft charges,
airport police said, in
an apparent deal with
the government. The
leader of the Awami
League party, who was
held on corruption
charges for almost a
year, left Zia
International Airport on
a British Airways flight
bound for London, said
airport police chief
Ruhul Amin.
"The flight carrying
Sheikh Hasina took off
at around 8.25 am (0225
GMT)," he told AFP.
From London she will
travel to the United
States to have medical
treatment for hearing
problems.
Begum Hasina has
problems with her vision
and hearing and also
suffers from high blood
pressure. Some of her
medical conditions are
the result of a 2004
assassination attempt.
There are rumors that
another imprisoned
opposition leader and
former prime minister,
Begum Khaleda Zia of the
Bangladesh Nationalist
Party(BNP), may also be
allowed to leave the
country on medical
grounds.
