Good Officers, Bad Officers
Sep 14 - While it is sad that the SSG lost more than a dozen of its braves alas, in vain - in a suicidal attack at Ghazi-Tarbela Camp which to my mind could have been avoided, yet it is still sadder a commentary on the state of the vigil, administration and preparedness of the most elite force of the Pakistan army. As an old soldier I just cannot condone it whatever the excuse and some heads must roll for the ignominy brought to the Paltan. It is a case of sheer incompetence on the part of the officers and commanders who consider themselves to be the out of the ordinary, walk around dandily with their trousers tucked in and berets pulled over the eyes instead of the right side if at all worn on their heads instead of stylishly tucked under the shoulder flap and throwing their weight around haughtily with artificially puffed up chests. Their entire carriage and turn out speaks volume portraying their being undisciplined personified. What else could one expect from them? Did the commander of the force that took part in Operation Lal Masjid need the brains of a Socrates to gauge the moronic state of mind of the student extremists of Ghazi brothers and expect not a revengeful attack from them? Why had he not envisaged the vendetta and planned and prepared for it? It is criminal to entrust the lives of many into the hands of such commanders. In our days we had a saying, There are no good armies or bad armies. There are only good officers and bad officers that make them so.

Does Mukhtar Mai have skeletons in her cupboard?
Mukhtar Mai's former secretary, Farhan, has threatened her that he would "tell the media her secrets." He has also threatened that he "will contact ISI and other intelligence agencies." Does he know about things that may tarnish Mukhtar's image?

First, there was a story in the Dawn that Mukhtar Mai had registered a case against her secretary. Then a few days later, I received a message from a Mukhtar supporter, accusing Farhan of many things. This was in response to an article on Mukhtar Mai' financial status that I wrote some time ago, based on the information provided by Farhan, along with an audited statement of accounts.

Mukhtar's supporter wanted me to believe that Farhan was involved in illegal activities while he was working for Mukhtar's organization. Well, I had no way of finding out the dark side of Farhan. I still don't know anything about him. Apparently, the letter is an attempt to cover up something. Only an independent inquiry can determine what is true and what is false and whether there is a dark side of Mukhtar Mai.
