A still from `Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara'Feb 27: Hindi film `Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara' produced by noted actor Anupam Kher has won three awards at the prestigious Riverside International Film Festival in Los Angeles.

The awards were presented on Sunday night, sources said.

The film won Riverside International Film Festival People's Choice Award 2006, Audience Choice Award and Riverside International Founder's Award to Anupam Kher for best performance in the film, the sources said.

The critically acclaimed film is directed by Janu Baruah from Assam, and also stars actress Urmila Matondkar. The film, is about an old professor who thinks he has killed Mahatma Gandhi. While he totters on the brink of insanity, his daughter tries to bring him out of this illusion.

Anupan Kher, said that he was `overwhelmed by the honor'. "The subject of the film is close to my heart, so the honor is really overwhelming", he said.

The movie also won an award at the 5th Karafilm Festival which was held in December in Karachi, Pakistan

Bipasha denies links with Amar Singh
Bipasha BasuFEB 27 - Bollywood’s hot nymph Bipasha Basu has denied that she had ever spoken to Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh who is embroiled in the phone-tapping incident.

The actress’ denial comes in the wake of the purported tapes making rounds in the media outlets alleging that the politician had clandestine conversation with the Bollywood actresses.

One Mumbai daily has published the conversation between the Uttar Pradesh politician and the film actress.

Basu, undoubtedly one of the hottest lady in the tinsel town has termed the purported tapped telephonic conversation as slanderous publication.

“I am totally shocked at the slanderous report. It’s nothing sort of outrageous that the alleged conversation has been attributed to me. I have never had a telephonic conversation with Amar Singh and the report is totally malicious, the actress told the media.

Ms Basu said, she was exploring legal options to sue the publication.

Samajwadi party leader Amar Singh has raised the alarm that his telephonic conversations were being taped at the behest of the Congress party. He filed a First Information Report (FIR) in the Delhi courts and some arrests have also been made in this regard.

The Prime Minister’s office and the Congress president Sonia Gandhi had stoutly denied that the Congress party had anything to do with the phone tapping of Amar Singh. It said that some private agency known to the Samajwadi party has been involved in this work.

JayapradhaWho ever may be behind Amar Singh’s phone tapping case, the fact is that the audio CDs of the purported conversation of the politician is now available to many private media outlets.

In one the conversation, Amar Singh is reportedly asking UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to transfer some high court judge. There are also reports that the tapes contain conversation with some Bollywood actresses.

Amar Singh's closeness with actress Jayapradha is well known. The south Indian actress who had stint with Telegue Desam party of Andhra Pradesh and was an MLA on its ticket was brought to Uttar Pradesh by Amar Singh and made to contest the Parliamentary elections. The actress is now a MP from Rampur.

Amar Singh’s friendship with super star Amitabh Bachan and industrialist Anil Ambani is also in the knowledge of public domain.

Actor Raj Babbar who too once formed Amar Singh’s coterie has fallen out as he had raised the standard of revolt against the Samajwadi leader calling him ‘fixer’ giving capitalist orientation to a socialist party. Babbar who is a MP from Agra was eventually expelled from the Samajwadi party for anti party activities.

Meanwhile the Supreme Court of India on Monday restrained the electronic and print media from broadcasting and publishing the contents of illegally tapped conversation of anyone, including that of Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh.

(From left) Anil Ambani, Amar Singh, Mulayam and Sahara group's Subroto RoyA Bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal said; “Having regard to the fact and circumstances of the case, we direct that the electronic and print media will not publish/display the unauthorized/illegal telephone tapping of any person till the matter is further heard and guidelines issued by this court,”

The court deleted the name of Congress party (through its president) as a party in the matter.

The court also directed the Centre and Delhi government to furnish the details of the numbers of telephones tapped and the numbers of telephones for which authorization could not be issued in stipulated time for being tapped.

It asked them to file a detailed affidavit in this regard within two weeks and posted the matter for further hearing on March 20.
(Syed Ali Mujtaba filed both stories from Chennai, India)
