The much acclaimed play "Tumhari Amrita" was recently staged in Pakistan
with Bollywood stars Farooq Shaikh and Shabana Azmi. There were three shows held of this hugely popular play and together they raised Rs10 million ($224,600) for the last year's earthquake victims in Pakistan.
'Tumhari Amrita' is an adapted version of A.R. Gurney's 'Love Letters' that’s beautifully translated into Urdu by writer Javed Siddiqui. Screenplay writer Firoz Khan has directed the play.
The play etches the relationship between the two protagonists, Amrita (Shabana Azmi) and Zulfi (Farooq Shaikh) over a lifetime through a series of letters.
Devoid of any theatrics, the two characters have only two tables and two chairs as props. Except for the magic of the spoken word, very little supplements the action. The first performance of this play was done 14 years ago.
“What we saw in Pakistan was unbelievable. There were people who paid through their nose to stand in the aisles and watch us perform. All the movers and shakers of Pakistan were there. Even President Musharraf’s mother and daughter came, " said Shabana
Azmi on her return to Mumbai.
Two shows of the play were held in Karachi on Feb 22, 23. The third was held n Islamabad on Feb
24.
All the three shows were highly popular and the two actors received a standing ovation at the end of each show.
