Lata's glowing tribute to Naushad |
|
|
May 5: Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar paid glowing
tributes to the
legendry music composer Naushad who died at Mumbai hospital today.
"With Naushad sahib I did some of my most important work in the
earlier phase of my career." His knowledge of classical and popular
Indian music made him the most eligible candidate for composing
immortality, Lata said.
Lata described Naushad's music a complete motion-picture experience
designed and carved out of the choicest raw material available to
musicians.
She recalled how Naushad made her run into the bathroom of the
recording studio to sing a portion of the mythic melody "Pyar kiya
to darna kya" in "Mughal-E-Azam".
"In those days there were no recording devices to create an echoic
effect. So Naushad sahib devised this method of creating an echo in
the song, she said, adding the maestro constantly experimented with
sound and voices introduced western-style orchestras in the songs of
the epic films of the era.
"I love "Uthaye ja unke situm" ("Andaz"), "Jaane wale se mulaqat"
and "Na milta gham ("Amar"), "Mohe panghat pe nandlal", "Beqas pe
karam" and of course "Pyar kiya to darna kya" in "Mughal-E-Azam".
Then I like Naushad sahib's "Dhundo dhundo re sajna" in "Ganga Jumna".
They don't make composers and songs like that any more," the Indian
nightingale said.
Naushad's major hits included Mughal-e-Azam, Mother India and Baiju
Bawra.
More on Naushad from Wikipedia
Naushad Ali (December 25, 1919 - May 5, 2006) was one of the
foremost music composers of Bollywood.
Naushad moved to Bombay from Lucknow in the late 1930s to try his
luck as a musician. After initial struggle, he enjoyed great success
in the 1940s as a music director.
Naushad has the credit of introducing the famous Lata Mangeshkar and
Mohammad Rafi to Hindi filmi music. Naushad's professional training
in Hindustani music enabled him in swift adaptations of the
Hindustani ragas to filmi music. He is by and large regarded as the
ONLY exponent of the usage of Hindustani music in Hindi films. Late
in his career, Naushad lamented upon the decreasing use of
Hindustani genre and so he dreamt of starting a music school which
teaches that genre. He has been quite successful in both bringing up
the school and breeding young talent in that school.
Songs for his music have been mostly penned down by Shakeel Badayuni.
In a sense, their partnership can be compared to that of Rodgers &
Hammerstein's.
His latest music composition was for the movie Taj Mahal—An Eternal
Love Story, by Akhbar Khan in 2005.
Naushad was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 1981 for lifetime
contribution to Indian cinema.
He passed away on May 5, 2006 at his residence in Bandra, Mumbai. |

Music director Naushad is dead |

May
5:: One of Indian cinema’s greatest music composers Naushad
Ali died in a Mumbai hospital today due to old age. He was
86.
Winner of Dadasaheb Phalke award, the highest national award
in culture, Naushad was not keeping well for some time. He
was admitted to Nanavati Hospital on April 20 and his death
came today at 9.15 am when he suffered a cardiac arrest.
Born on December 25, 1919, Naushad spent his early childhood
in Lucknow. He moved to Mumbai in the late 1930s and got his
first break as an independent music director in "Prem Nagar"
(1940). There was no looking back after that.
The man who began his career 66 years ago continued working
almost till the end with his last film being Akbar Khan’s
recent release "Taj Mahal - The Eternal Love Story".
The 67 films for which he composed music includes greats
like "Anmol Ghadi" (1946), "Andaaz" (1949), "Baiju Bawra"
(1952) and "Mughal-e-Azam" (1960) and Mother India, all of
which had achieved phenomenal commercial successes.
Colleagues remember Naushad as an icon of composite culture.
"He was not just a music director, but a symbol of composite
culture of the country, who brought dignity, class and
refinement to the Indian film music, lyricist and noted
script writer Javed Akhtar said.
He said Naushad's contribution to the film industry has been
awesome. "For years Naushad was the name of Indian film
music....We will always remember him with great respect and
reverence," he added.
Renowned director Mahesh Bhatt said Naushad was a "symbol of
secular India, a man who really lived out what the composite
culture was all about in his daily life. His music has a
resonance of that composite culture."
"When he composed Bhajans it seemed he was a devout Hindu.
He had the depth of India and the great civilisation really
ran through his veins," Bhatt said.
Bhatt recalled that Naushad was known for his aversion to
the fast-catching 'remix culture' and used to say "we must
change with the changing times, but should not lose
connection with the roots."
The master composer used to take time out to indulge in his
other love - angling, or the sport of fishing with a rod and
line. Members of the Maharashtra State Angling Association
recalled how Naushad, joined the body in 1959.
"When Naushad was younger, he used to fish at Mumbai's Powai
Lake with lyricists Shakeel Badaiyuni and Majrooh Sultanpuri",
a official said.
Members of the association also remember Naushad for his
love of the beauty of nature. "It is in the beautiful
setting of Powai Lake with its trees, birds and butterflies
that I have often got my inspiration for some of my best
works," the official quoted Naushad as saying. |
