Aamir Khan in the line of fire |
|
|
April 15: Aamir Khan who has voiced strong support for those displaced
by the Narmada dam project in Gujarat, is in line of fire by the
youth wings of the BJP and the Congress parties.
The youth groups have joined hands to oppose the mega star for his
stand on this developmental issue.
In Ahmedabad, BJP's youth wing came out in strength to stop the
screening of Amir Khan’s film "Rang De Basanti".
Meanwhile, the youth Congress workers staged demonstrations in
Vadodara and Surat and burnt his effigies and pulled down posters of
his film.
On Friday, in a show of support to the Save Narmada Movement,
Amir Khan had visited the protesters who have been staging a sit-in
at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. He appealed to the government to
rehabilitate and compensate those who would be displaced by the dam.
Political parties in Gujarat got an opportunity to demonstrate that
they would brook no interference on the issue.
"We have repeatedly been saying that we will not tolerate any
interference on the Narmada issue. How dare Aamir Khan speak against
the project? Now let him face the wrath of the Gujarati people for
his unwanted interference," said Harshad Patel, a Youth Congress
worker in Vadodara.
"After stopping screenings of Aamir's film in the multiplexes, we
will see to it that no other cinema halls run his movie," said BJP
youth wing general secretary Amit Thaker.
"Even theatre owners want to pull down film posters and stop
screening of Aamir's film because sentiments of Gujaratis are
attached to the Narmada. If Aamir Khan wants to ally with the anti-Narmada
lobby, there is no place for him at least in Gujarat," he added.
The controversy is about raising the height of the dam, under
construction on the Narmada river in south Gujarat.
The Save Narmada Movement activists oppose the decision to raise the
height of the dam. They allege that over 35,000 people, displaced by
the dam, have not been rehabilitated. |

|
|
April
14 : Salman Khan aka Sallu was granted bail by Jodhpur court
on Thursday. He was given bail on a personal bond of Rs 2
lakh and two sureties of Rs 1 lakh each.
Salman was sent to jail Monday, after being sentenced to
five years imprisonment for killing an endangered species of
a deer called Chinkara or black buck.
Sallu's brother Suhail Khan, sister Alvira, his friend
Katrina Kaif, besides a number of Bollywood personalities
including Govinda, David Dhawan and Sajiid Nadiadwala were
present in the court when Salman was granted bail by the
judge.
Police had a tough time controlling the jubiliant fans, as
the news of his being granted bail came out. A large number
of Salman's fans and supporters had gathered outside the
court since Thursday morning, shouting slogans in his
support. Police had to resort to a mild lathi charge to
control them. |
