Sonia Ajmeri, a
eunuch from Ahmedabad, who is all set to wed Amrish, a pilot with
Air-India, was busy shopping for her trousseau in Mumbai over the
weekend.
She was like any other blushing bride when she spoke about her
relationship with Amrish and their life ahead, taking a break from her
shopping spree.
‘‘We met for the first time in Jamnagar. It was love at first sight for
Amrish. From our first meeting to the beginnings of our love to the
time that Amrish proposed marriage — it all seems like a dream,”
recounted Sonia.
‘‘I knew that the world would not accept our relationship. I told
Amrish to go ahead and marry a different girl; knowing that he loved me
was enough for me. But it was not acceptable to Amrish,” said Sonia.
The couple decided to tie the knot, as society frowns upon unwed
lovers.
Sonia’s parents work in the state government. Her mother is an officer
in the education department, while her father is an assistant
commissioner in the anti-corruption bureau. Sonia was educated in a
convent school in Panchgani.
“My incomplete physique was the cause of concern for my parents. They
consulted many doctors to make me a boy, but were disheartened. My
heart was with the Goddess Bahucharmata,” she said.
A Muslim, Sonia would surreptitiously visit the Goddess Bahucharmata
temple, where she met other eunuchs.
Sex is not a priority with Sonia. She recently had a sex change
operation done in Paris. While the couple can have a conjugal
relationship, Sonia will never be able to conceive.
“Sex is important, but it is not everything, especially when there is
love. We want to keep our relationship very sacred. We want to be
companions, in good times and bad,” she said.
The couple will wed at the Bahucharmata temple in Ahmedabad, on March
5. A reception will be held the following day, which will be attended
by around 1,000 eunuchs.
The main attraction at the wedding will be the ‘mameru’ ceremony.
Sonia’s sister Kajal, also a eunuch, will pay the ‘mameru’.
She will gift two kg gold, 12 kg silver, a car, refrigerator, TV,
washing machine, cell phone and 1,111 copper and brass utensils to her
sister.
