NOV 24: Saudi Arabia announced on Wednesday the hiring of its first female pilot, Captain Hanadi Zakariya Hindi.

Saudi Arabia will see its first female pilot take to the skies next year, flying with the private fleet of Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.

"In a first move of its kind, Kingdom Holding Company has announced the hiring of Captain Hanadi Zakariya Hindi, the first female Saudi pilot in the history of Saudi Arabia," the company said in a statement.

Hanadi , who was trained for a pilot's license in Jordan, signed a contract with prince Alwaleed’s private airline, the prince said.

Commenting on Hanadi's hiring, Prince Talal, a senior member of the royal family, was quoted as saying that it is a "historic move for Saudi ladies".

"Recruiting Captain Hindi as a pilot ... is a major step in the employment of women and in their more active participation in Saudi society," Prince Alwaleed said in a statement.

"The move transcends the traditional role of Saudi women previously confined to working in the health, education and philanthropic sectors. I am in full support of Saudi ladies working in all fields," he added.

The billionaire prince, nephew of the Saudi king is listed by Forbes as the world’s fourth-richest man.

Captain Hindi, who was striving to become a pilot, is expected to start working as by the mid of next year.

"Women are very capable of taking on any job previously monopolised by men," Hanadi said.

"My dream is to fly a plane of Saudi Arabian Airlines. If this doesn’t happen, I’m pretty sure a Saudi private company will hire me,” Hindi reporters in March.
