BANGALORE, India, DEC 5 - Brazilian-born striker Cristiano de Lima Junior playing for a domestic Indian club died on the field after scoring the winning goal for his team, Indian football official Alberto Colaso revealed.

Teammates and bystanders attempt to revive Brazilian-born footballer Cristiano de Lima Junior (C) of India's Dempo Sports Club after he collapsed while playing in the Federation Cup Final match in Bangalore. De Lima, who was playing for the club based in the western Indian state of Goa, died on the field after scoring the winning goal for his team during the 78th minute of the Federation Cup final and collapsed immediately thereafter, a witness said.(AFP)

"After scoring the goal he had a collision with the goalkeeper. Then he fell to the ground," the All India Football Federation chief said Sunday.

"He joined the club in October for this season. It is sad," he told AFP.

De Lima, 24, who was playing for Dempo Sports Club based in the western state of Goa, scored the second goal during the 78th minute of the Federation Cup final and collapsed immediately thereafter, Colaso said.

"I saw officials rushing to the scene and giving first aid. He did not seem to have any life in him at that point of time," a witness said.

Authorities in Bangalore's Hosmat hospital said de Lima was brought in dead.

"The exact cause of the death will be known only after the post mortem results," a hospital spokesman said.

De Lima's Dempo Sports Club won the game 2-0.

This is the first time Dempo has won the Federation Cup, one of India's major football tournaments. (AFP reports)

Dempo files case

Cristiano de Lima JuniorMeanwhile, Dempo Sports Club officials have lodged a complaint of criminal negligence leading to death of Cristiano de Lima Junior, against Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul, the Hosmat hospital and the Karnataka State Football Association, the local organisers of the Federation Cup.

The complaint has been lodged with the Sampangi Ramnagar police, under whose jurisdiction the Kanteerava Stadium falls, by Dempo coach Armando Colaco.

"The team manager has lodged a complaint against the organisers alleging inadequate medical facilities and that the Mohun Bagan goalkeeper deliberately struck the victim. The complaint also alleges negligence by Hosmat," joint commissioner of police (crime) Narayan Gowda told TOI.

While doctors at the Hosmat hospital said Junior was 'brought dead,' Dempo officials and soccer fans -- who gathered at the hospital, said lack of adequate medical facilities at the field caused the death.

Junior's body has been taken to the Victoria Hospital for an inquest to ascertain the exact cause of death -- whether it was a heart attack or damage to the wind pipe.

There was anger, dismay, frustration and tears as the players gathered at the hospital after the game. Mohun Bagan's Brazilian Roberto Mendes also sat on a bed next to Junior's body at the hospital, in tears, contacting his friend's wife in Goa and others over the mobile .

"We realised he was hit on the chest or neck by the goalkeeper, probably accidentally. When he did not get up for long, some of our own players and the Bagan players tried artificial resuscitation," said Stanly Colaco one of the Dempo players.

"If there had been an ambulance with a ventilator at the ground, he could have been saved. Also, why was he taken to an orthopaedic hospital when there was a proper hospital a few metres away from the ground," said Dempo's assistant coach Mauricio Alfonso. Dempo officials and players complained that Junior was left lying at the stadium for well over 25 minutes after the incident.

AIFF secretary Albert Colaco who was present at the hospital described the incident as "tragic" but refused to comment on the organisers. (Times of India reports)
