Munni Begum says pop craze a passing phase
JAN 11 - Loved equally both in Pakistan and India, popular Pakistani Ghazal singer Munni Begum is optimistic that the current trend of artistes gaining popularity overnight by taking the pop music route is short-lived. Begum, who has for the last eight years been living in Chicago and who was in India recently to take part in a concert, said she also feels that the timeless quality of Ghazals will keep the genre alive. "Nowadays, artistes want to become famous overnight. Both in India and Pakistan, the new generation is crazy about pop music. But this is just a passing phase and will not last a long time," Begum said. Born in Murshidabad, India, Munni Begum lived in Dhaka and moved to Pakistan after the 1971 debacle. Recalling her early years, she told PTI, an Indian news agency, "Nobody in my family had any connection with music. But I got deeply interested in music after getting trained in singing in Dhaka and I started performing in school functions without my father's knowledge."

Pakistani fashion goes beyond borders

JAN 11 - The 11th edition of India's annual wedding extravaganza - Bridal Asia 2007, kicked off with a show in Delhi on Wednesday in which Pakistani label KARMA is also participating. Karma, an apparel brand labels like Karma Pink, Karma Haute Couture and Karma Wedding, was represented by designers Maheen and Kamee. The collection from Karma Wedding, a six-month old label, stood out for its traditional Muslim look. The highlights of the line were the dominant silhouettes — the sheraras and gararas. “The sheraras and gararas are common attires for brides in Pakistan. We decided to bring them to India because they’re distinctly different from what the Indian designers are showcasing and hence have a novelty value,” says Maheen. The “old-world charm” is what Maheen feels is the USP of their collection. “Though our traditional craft forms are the same, works of Indian designers have a lot of Bollywood influence. We don’t have that and hence our work looks more old-world,” he reasons. The Karma collection also had two parts — Decorage, drawing inspiration from the British Raj, and Navratan, influenced by the nine gemstones. The Decorage line had a muted color story of nudes, creams, ivories, pale pinks and peaches. Navratan used brighter jewel colors like blues, yellows, greens and reds. The ornamentation was in metallic gold, loaded with traditional embroidery, stones and crystals. Georgettes, chiffons, charmeuse satin with a touch of jamevar made up the fabrics.
